MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Former co-workers say a New York man fatally shot outside a South Beach cafe had advocated against guns and violence.
Miami Beach police say Lavon Walker of Brooklyn, 30, was shot twice early Sunday on a sidewalk along Ocean Drive.
He died at a hospital. Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said in an email Tuesday that investigators recovered a Jeep believed to be involved in the shooting and detained "multiple persons of interest" in Miami who are cooperating with the investigation.
Walker was a former outreach worker at the Crown Heights Mediation Center. Its director told The Miami Herald that Walker had been vacationing in Florida.
A 2010 New York Times article mentioned Walker's experiences as a volunteer mentoring young people in areas where there had been shootings.
