Stanley Cup used as baptismal font, horse feeder

- The playoffs gets underway Wednesday for the National Hockey League on what is the 100th anniversary year of the NHL and the 125th birthday of the coveted Stanley Cup.

Named after Lord Stanley, governor of Canada who donated the Dominion Cup for the winner of the amateur hockey league at the time, the Stanley Cup is "the biggest deal trophy in all of sports," according to commissioner Gary Bettman.

"This trophy has a charisma about it. Children have been baptized in it and a Triple Crown winner has had lunch out of it," said Bettman.

The names of every player on every team that has ever won the championship is engraved on the trophy.

And 125 years later, the trophy is running out of space for the next winner's names.

"There is one space left on the bottom band. The top band will come off and we'll start a new band," said Bettman.
