Abby Wambach in midst of addiction recovery

- Retired soccer star Abby Wambach, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion, wants to move forward in her life after a very difficult year.

Wambach, 35, was arrested early one morning in April for DWI. She was charged with a misdemeanor and ordered to complete a recovery program.

She is also in the midst of a divorce and is recovering from opioid addiction.

Wambach made the revelations in her recently released memoir, 'Forward.'

“I’m doing well. I’m doing really well. I have to focus on today. It was a healing cathartic thing to write it. I am still in the super-soon-after this DUI. I want to be in it and help people. I’m still figuring it out and learning about this whole process," said Wambach.

One of the greatest players in U.S. Women's Soccer history, Wambach says she was never high or drunk during a game and the drugs she abused were all legally obtained.

"I was in a lot of pain towards the end of my career. In order to play, I had to take pain medicine," said Wambach.

As she fights to stay clean, Wambach wants to encourage others to seek help.

"The number one thing you can do is talk to somebody. The less you talk about it, the more it manifests into something else," said Wambach.

She'll be signing copies of 'Forward,' Thursday, Sept. 15 at Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, NJ, 6 p.m.- 8 p.m.
