NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Spanish soccer legend David Villa, arguably the best player in all of Major League Soccer, announced Wednesday that he had signed a one-year contract extension with the New York City Football Club.
"We are very happy. I am very proud to do that," the team captain and reigning MVP told Good Day New York.
Since the NYCFC came into existence in 2015, there have been high hopes for the professional soccer team based in NYC with Villa on its roster right from the start.
"We need to be better. We need to be more competitive. We need to continue to grow in this club. We are still so young. We are only three seasons in the league," said Villa.
The popular striker nicknamed 'El Guaje' in his native Spain due to his reputation of taking on much older players during his youth, says he and his family have settled into life in New York.
"I am very comfortable here. My family is happy. It is a great opportunity for me to live this experience in one of the greatest cities in the world. People stop me less in the streets than in Spain, but the people have helped me out a lot since I came here," said Villa.
