NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Driverless cars are coming sooner than many people think.
While autonomous vehicles will be a major convenience, they could also cause the largest job displacement since the Industrial Revolution.
By some estimates, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers could lose their job as a result of a robot at the wheel.
Some experts, including car reviewer Lauren Fix, say weather and other issues are a weak point for autonomous vehicles.
Taxi fleet owner Aleksey Medvedovskiy believes autonomous cars will replace his drivers within the next five years.
So the question becomes, what will happen to the all of the workers whose job description is "driver?"
Medvedovskiy believes the government intervention is necessary to retrain drivers to perform other jobs to put food on the table.
