NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - For the first leg of a three leg journey on their motorcycles, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, girlfriend Sandra Lee and rock legend Billy Joel will hit the open road from Kings Park to New Paltz.
The Motorcycle Ride for Breast Cancer is an effort by the governor's office to draw attention to breast cancer.
"A new piece of legislation that we’re signing this year is going to make it a lot easier for women to get screened. It can save lives," said Cuomo.
The new legislation expands screening hours at hospitals and removes insurance barriers for screening procedures.
The ride which will ultimately take the trio flanked by 10 state troopers and hundreds of other motorcycle enthusiasts to Buffalo is personal for Cuomo as Lee has battled breast cancer.
"It’s a family affair when you have breast cancer or any kind of cancer. I think this is something Andrew really likes to do and we like to do," said Lee.
Cuomo, Lee and Joel are all long-time motorcyclists.
"Billy is very into motorcycles. He has a retro version of an old state police bike that he is going to be riding today," said Cuomo.
Joel joins the first leg of the ride on June 27. The second and third legs of the ride will take place on Friday, July 8 and Wednesday, July 13.
