NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - The One World Literacy Foundation has found that two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare.
The fourth grade is the watershed year. If a child is not reading proficiently in the fourth grade, he or she will have an approximate 78 percent chance of not catching up.
I got a chance to talk to some fourth graders about how a book series called 'I Survived' is teaching them through historic fiction that they can survive anything.
The captivating series by Lauren Tarshis takes young readers through terrifying and thrilling stories such as the 2011 Jolin tornado; Nazi invasion and Hidenberg disaster. It is told through the eyes of a boy who lived to tell the tales.
'I Survived' is available from Scholastic.
