NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Some $46B worth of holiday gifts are returned after the holiday season.
If you're one of those people, start by checking the return policy for the item.
"Nothing is worse when you think you have a couple of weeks to return something but then you don't have those weeks," said Hitha Herzog, Chief Research Officer of H Squared Research.
Second, take a photo of your receipts so you have them handy.
Third, negotiate with retailers. Ask if you can exchange the gift for something of the same value.
"Make sure you are going at the earlier part of the day. People working in the stores are more fresher, more inclined to help you and you can get in and out of it," said Herzog.
As for re-gifting, Herzog says don't with anything that is custom made or monogrammed.
Also a major no-no: undergarments.
"Just keep them in your drawer," said Herzog.
