NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - History Channel host Brad Metlzer and his team are being credited with discovering that the American flag seen in an iconic photo taken at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001 had been lost. In 'The 9/11 Flag Rise from the Ashes' airing Sunday at 10:30 p.m., Meltzer explains that they've found it, too.
"The flag went missing between 9/11 and when it was raised at Yankee Stadium. Someone switched it along the way. The flag signed by Giuliani and Pataki (and raised at the stadium) was the wrong size," said Meltzer.
The History Channel worked with police, forensic experts, eye witnesses and the owners of the real flag for the better part of a year authenticating it.
As it turns out, in 2014, someone who identified himself as a former Marine walked into a firehouse and gave the flag to the firefighters there.
While Meltzer wouldn't give away the entire story behind the disappearance and discovery of the flag, he did say there is one identifiable section of the Stars and Stripes that convinced him it was the real deal.
"The best part of the story is the ending. The flag will be unveiled at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on Thursday Sept. 8, 2016," said Meltzer.
