Gabby Douglas missed VMAs due to dental issue

Teammate Laurie Hernandez said Douglas went to the emergency room with a swollen jaw from some type of tooth infection.

- The 'Final Five' were only four at the MTV Video Music Awards held at Madison Square Garden Sunday night.

The gold medal winning U.S. women's gymnastics team was missing Gabby Douglas, 20, who is recovering from a dental issue, according to teammate Laurie Hernandez.

"She got an allergic reaction. It had something to do with her tooth. Her face was a little swollen. She went to the emergency room for it. She looked sick," said Hernandez.

On Sunday evening, Douglas tweeted a photo of herself lying in her hotel bedroom with the caption, "Out of hospital & resting comfortably! #FinalFive sad I can't be with u 2 present tonight @MTV thank you xoxo."

Douglas was the target of social media critics during the Rio Olympics for not placing her hand on her heart during the playing of the national anthem and for supposedly looking less than enthusiastic during the team's remarkable run.
