Tips for a successful tag sale

Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly had different strategies on how to run a tag sale.

- Bruce Littlefield and Alison Stewart, both experts on running successful tag sales, shared tips on how to shop and sell with excellent results.

1. dress NOT to impress; the better you dress, the higher the price you're paying

2. if you touch it, you're going to take it with you, so keep your hands in your pockets until you know you really want it

3. if the seller says they don't know the condition of an item, you should get a better deal

4. if the item is broken and you really want it, you can always buy it and have it repaired

5. the nicer the seller, the more I want to buy

6. is it useful to you right now? if not, sell it

7. it's OK to have seller's remorse; take the item off the table

8. if you're a seller and you tell me a story about the item, it makes me want it more

More tips can be found in Littlefield's book, 'Garage Sale America,' and Stewart's book, 'Junk: Digging Through America's Love Affair with Stuff.'
