State of hip hop

(FOX 5 NY) - As hip hop music and culture continue to flood mainstream society, some critics and fans feel like it has lost its soul and that making money is more important than making music. So what's really going on? I had to come in to the DJ booth with the one and only Funkmaster Flex for some insight.

Hip hop can seem like a non-stop stream of lyrics about drug dealing, sexy women, guns and violence and always the hustle to be seen as hot. Funkmaster Flex says too many aspiring artists mistakenly think they can buy a career.

But this super influential DJ says there are artists who stay true to their voice and make great music, just not as many as before. They're the artists who earn an accolade as sought after as any award statue.

One new artist who gets that is Paterson's own Fetty Wap. Flex says he's creative and original and it's paying off.

Flex tells me one thing you can count on with hip hop is that if there's something you don't like, it's sure to change.
