Scratch DJ Academy

- Scratch DJ Academy is the place to be if you want to learn the fine art of DJing and it's not just for beginners.  Some very famous DJs go there undercover to work on their skills

Rob Principe founded it 13 years ago to make it easier for people to learn how to DJ.

"I started the company with a senior moment from my grandfather who instead of giving me a hundred dollar check gave me a thousand dollar check for my birthday," Principe says.

He formed a partnership with Jam Master Jay, the legendary DJ from Run DMC. He started offering classes in the fall of 2002.  On October 30 of that year, Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in a recording studio in Jamaica, Queens.

Principe vowed to keep the academy going.  He also started Scratch Events, a network of DJs for hire, and Scratch Weddings.  He now has academies in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia.

His locations teach about 30,000 people a year and he says his network has entertained 27 million people.
