"Empire" is known as much for its fashion as for its drama. And it’s not just Cookie! Lucious Lyon and his sons Andre, Hakim, and Jamaal offer every gentleman plenty of inspiration.
Eric Jennings, Men's Fashion Director at Saks Fifth Avenue, broke down the looks, starting with Andre. To achieve this character's "polished... professional" look, Jennings selected a fitted charcoal gray suit, adding the perfect hat, gloves, briefcase, and top coat to top off the outfit.
Next up? Hakim Lyon and what Jennings calls "urban couture." According to Jennings, "this is very inspired by that place in menswear where the street meets the runway, the runway meets the street." To get the Hakim look, Jennings chose sportswear classics like sneakers, a hoodie, a baseball cap, and a backpack, all executed in luxe materials with pops of color. And Jennings explained that the sneakers are essential, emphasizing that "... a lot of guys now who dress this way start with the sneakers and then they work up from there."
Of course, I had to give it a shot, and Jennings styled me in looks inspired by Lucious and Jamaal. For the Lucious look, Jennings picked out a luxuriously tailored Italian jacket in a powerful color and pattern. To finish off the look, a pair of alligator monk strap shoes and an elegant fedora did the trick.
And finally? Jamaal. According to Jennings, this character's look is "casual, it's comfortable, but it's still elevated." To achieve this vibe, I wore a suede jacket, cashmere hoodie, a Henley (with a touch of cashmere), jeans, and hiking boots designed by the rapper J. Cole for Bally. Yes, I did feel transported into the "Empire" world -- if only for a moment.
