Man killed when porch roof collapses

PALMYRA, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 54-year-old western New York man has died after his ice- and snow-covered porch roof collapsed on him.

Troopers say they were dispatched Monday for a report of a man trapped under a collapsed porch roof at a home in the Wayne County town of Palmyra, 20 miles southeast of Rochester.

When emergency crews arrived, they found Peter Nelson pinned under debris from the fallen roof. Troopers say he was pulled out and found to be dead.

A neighbor tells local media that Nelson had been clearing a heavy accumulation of ice and snow off the porch roof. Troopers say their preliminary investigation determined the roof separated from the house and fell, pinning Nelson.

Nelson was a foreign language teacher at Canandaigua Academy.
